About Us

The Beginnings

Wyoma Farm was founded in 1976 by Gary, a young man with dreams of Wyoming’s vast plains, soaring mountains, and cowboy lifestyle. Inspired by the state, Gary named his farm Wyoma, blending his aspiration with his new reality. Alongside his wife Pam, Gary worked tirelessly to make their sheep and beef farm profitable, bucking the trend of transitioning to dairy farming.

Family Legacy

Gary’s dedication and hard work were passed down to his son Karl, who took over the farm in 2016. To this day, the family manages all the shearing and wool sorting themselves, preserving the traditional skills and deep knowledge that Gary imparted. However, the value of strong wool has dramatically declined, making it more of a cost than a commodity.

Rediscovering Wool

As a Biology teacher and environmental enthusiast, I saw the potential to transform this situation. While striving to reduce plastic use in our household, I rediscovered the superior qualities of wool over synthetic fibers. Wool’s natural properties made it a far better alternative, offering comfort, warmth, and durability.

Innovation and Sustainability

Determined to add value to our wool and help combat plastic pollution, I taught myself to sew and began experimenting with new uses for our wool. Beyond traditional wool bedding and jerseys, I sought to create innovative woolen products that offer sustainable alternatives to plastic-based items.

Why Buy NZ Made ?

OK, I’ll be honest: at first, I didn’t consider manufacturing locally because I assumed it wasn’t possible or financially viable. Many New Zealand brands get their manufacturing done overseas, and only 35% of our clothing is made locally. When we did try outsourcing overseas, we faced huge delays and poor customer service. So, we decided to explore local manufacturing. It was a daunting process, but it turned out to be the right choice.

We discovered that there are many steps involved in manufacturing a garment, and each step required the involvement of a different business. We had to liaise with eight different businesses just to get our first product off the ground. However, at every step, we received amazing customer service from genuinely good and helpful people, which made a huge difference to us as newcomers in the textiles industry.

Our decision to go local also aligns with our values around sustainability. Although our wool travels within New Zealand from the sheep’s back to a finished product and then to the customer, this involves significantly less traveling than if we had chosen to ship our wool overseas and then ship the final product back again. Choosing New Zealand manufacturers also means that we support companies bound by our environmental and employment laws, giving us more confidence that we’re not supporting unethical waste disposal or unfair worker treatment.

It’s true that New Zealand-made items can be more expensive, but it’s an investment in quality, the environment, our economy, and our people – and that is priceless.
